Another Side of Ethnic Cleansing

When one first thinks of ethnic cleansing ,immediately what comes to mind is mass murder. In Darfur, ethnic cleansing has taken on another meaning. Sexual violence towards women has been happening in this region for many years. The Sudanese government has prevented many international groups from entering the country to assist women dealing with this tragedy. The Sudanese government's role is to protect women from assaults. Instead, they are oppressing women and punishing them when attempts to report sexual assaults are made.
There is a high price to pay as a survivor of rape. Socially and culturally, these women are stigmatized by the community and their families. Many women are abandoned by their families, are refused medical care, some women were imprisoned if they attempted to seek medical care or others commit suicide. The Sudanese backed Jajaweed, Arab militia, reportedly have used rape as a weapon to commit ethnic cleansing of Sudanese women. These women are punished and the children from these rapes are left in limbo;not belonging to one ethnic group or culture. There will be nothing for these women and children to call their own;no land ,no family,no culture and no country. The frequency of these rapes and the offspring produced will eliminate the culture that was one rich and thriving.
