Sudan is the largest country in Africa. It is roughly the size of France. The Darfur conflict has displaced over 2.7 million people,5.6 million people have been displaced throughout Sudan and this has forced people into the neighboring country of Chad. The Sudanese government has expelled approximately 13 international aid groups as of 2009. Sudan is in one of the most remote places in Africa. Most of the victims involved are non-Arab or African tribal groups of Darfur.
For years, these people have had very little political status and have endured economic hardship.Along with this ,the Arabs of the region have lost much of their land due to changes in the climate becoming more arid and the land less fertile. This has lead to competition between the two groups for land and water;a scarce commodity in the region .The African tribes and the Arabs tried to coexist peacefully. This unfortunately was not successful and violence erupted between the two groups. The Arab militia or Janjaweed as it is called, was supported by the Sudanese government. It was originally a loosely organized group until the Sudanese government perceived that the African tribal groups had a support base for insurgents. The Janjaweed were heavily armed and well supplied. The Janjaweed and the Sudanese military forces were virtually one big military super power. The difference being the Janjaweed could reach those remote areas and destroy whatever was in their path on horse and camel being approximately 20,000 strong.
In their quest to eradicate these different African tribes, the Janjaweed and the Sudanese government imposed barbaric and savage attacks against these tribes. The idea was not just to take over the land;they were out to destroy the very existence of these African tribes.Men and boys were killed in great masses, women and girls were raped or abducted(which was the weapon of choice against women and girls) and all means of agricultural production was destroyed. Many villages were burned, water sources were poisoned, irrigation systems destroyed, food stores and seed stocks were decimated, trees cut down.Much of the cattle had been looted on a grand scale or died of starvation and lack of water. The land became inhospitable to live in. As a consequence to this action, the region is unable to sustain itself. The conditions are so negatively extreme that humanitarian aid has been difficult to implement. Many of theses villages are inaccessible to reach and the government does not support aid to these people, nor does it protect the humanitarian groups that try to enter the region.
So where does one go from here......? What point do nations globally step in? Should other nations be mandated to act when genocide occurs? Does the suffering of people so far away impact our individual lives in ways we do not realize?I have to believe it does.
