Genocide is nothing new to the human race. Within the last 100 years, a greater awareness of genocide has been shown occurring in many parts of the world, largely in part, due to the global community becoming smaller. There has been great focus on places like Sudan and the Darfur region in Africa. Even though these events happening in Sudan are of great importance we must not forget that these crimes against humanity are occurring in other parts of Africa as well. At least 28 Sub-Saharan African states have been at war since 1980. Places such as Angola,Democratic Republic of Congo, Nigeria, Liberia, Rwanda,Uganda, Zimbabwe, Cote d'Ivoire , Sierra Leone, Algeria and Ethiopia have and continue to suffer human casualties, torture, rape, displacement and economic hardship.
Many of the reasons why these atrocities occur and continue to be fueled are political corruption, human rights violations, oppression and great poverty. The mark left over by European colonialism significantly impacted the African culture and way of life and caused tribes , once peaceful towards each other, now became bitter enemies due to boundary issues created by the European rulers. The struggles to rebuild were great once independence was gained or when the Europeans left. This left the sense of community and culture for many African tribes eradicated. The Europeans imposed many of their beliefs and culture on the tribes people; in a sense destroying their identities and exploiting the African people.
With the help of European and Western humanitarian aid, I wonder if the price for help includes many"strings attached"such as political, corporate interest and foreign policies issues.
